RETREAT FROM DECENCY

BY DAVID GROSSACK

How sad it is that when we have a president who does something righteous, brave and decent, there are swarms of politicians and pundits who are frantically disassociating themselves from him.

The invasion of Iraq will be viewed by future historians as a noble sacrifice by a nation determined to work for change in a part of the world where dictatorship and tyranny have been the rule, not the exception.

Overthrowing the regime of Saddam Hussein was not a mistake. It was a blow against terrorism, nuclear proliferation and a sadistic tyrant who arranged for the murder, torture and rape of his helpless subjects at his whim.

Though the view expressed by the liberal media and dissidents in Congress, as well as presidential candidates, seeks to ignore Iraqi efforts to destabilize the region and export terror, the record would indicate that Saddam's Baathist regime was a long festering sore that needed to be dealt with.

For years, Iraq supported terrorist Abu Nidal, the cold blooded killer who bombed the airports in Vienna and Rome and machined gunned innocent folks at houses of worship in Istanbul and Vienna. Nidal, after a life of killing, extortion and kidnappings, retired to Iraq under regime protection until his death contemporaneous to the American invasion.

To some this kind of stuff does not count as terrorism, because the neo-isolationists insist no terrorism came from Iraq. They also do not discuss the fact that the criminal who pushed Leon Klinghoeffer overboard on the Achille Lauro was found by US soldiers in Iraq.

If no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, it was not because Mr. Hussein did not want them. Indeed, the record is replete with Hussein's purchase of components for nuclear devices in the past. If his well known and well documented use of mustard gas on defenseless Kurds was not use of a weapon of mass destruction, what was it?

What of the research by investigative journalist Jayna Davis, who traces the travels and associations of Timothy Mc Veigh and Terry Nichols to a conspiracy of Iraqis and Islamic radicals working together to facilitate the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995? Ms. Davis' has credibility, the survivors of the Oklahoma City bombing filed a lawsuit based on her research against Iraq, and the media has squelched all news of it.

Iraq has been maliciously trying to promote extremism in the US by support of several violent variants of radicals for many years. Because we know of other Iraqi support for terrorism, it is not much of a leap to infer that covert terrorism and sabotage has occurred here and elsewhere under Iraqi sponsorship.

No ties to terrorism? It is also known that Hussein tried to have Bush 41 assassinated in Kuwait. Who is kidding whom?

No ties to terrorism? It is known that Hussein had arranged for payments to the families of Hamas suicide bombers each time they killed Israeli children and women. While some say that Iraq's secular Baathist party would not help Islamic Al Qaeda, this is total nonsense. Iraq admitted to helping the Hamas bombers who were just as religious.

The suggested abandonment of the Iraq war and the constant criticism of Presdient Bush over his decisions, the ad homonym attacks on former Secretary Rumsfeld...these are the cries of the modern days versions of Lindberg's America Firsters, those who would appease or ignore tyrants.

Like the followers of isolationist demagogue Patrick Buchanan, and the strange assortment of Hollywood glitterati such as Barbara Streisand, Sean Penn and Alec Baldwin, who gravitate to any attempt to bash Bush, the new Congressional anti war tendency disregards America's interests.

The American people need to know that this war was necessary for world security and the defense of our borders from international terrorism. It was also a blow in support of human rights.

When all the facts are out and placed in their proper context, President Bush will be recognized as a brave and courageous leader, and his critics will be recognized for their disloyal undermining of our war effort. For it is obvious that every time an American politician or celebrity criticizes the war, Al Qaeda and the Baath terrorists bask in smug satisfaction.

Giving comfort to the enemy must cease.
